- In 2016, $140 Billion was distributed round the world
- In 2015, America gave the most money away ($31 Billion) to 40 countries and organizations
- The United States donated 0.17% of their GDP to foreign aid, while Sweden and Norway donated 1% of their GDP to aid
- Aid often goes the third and second world countries
International Monetary Fund
IMF and World Bank were founded after WW2 to maintain peace
- These two institutions are meant to improve global economic stability
- Richer countries handled most of the financing and have the greatest influence
- Goal of the IMF is to help countries that are are economic need
- World Bank has a more long-term approach
- Goals revolve around eradication of poverty through specific projects
- Reputation of these organization has been dwindling due to practices like lending money to corrupt governments
IMF vs the World Bank
The IMF oversees the stability of the world's monetary system, while the World Bank's goal is to reduce poverty by offering assistance to middle-income and low-income countries
- 44 countries gathered for the Bretton Woods conference
- The goal of the conference was to agree on a new framework for the international monetary system, which is the rules and institutions that keep the global economy running smoothly
